What are food stamps?
Food stamps, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), are government benefits that help low-income families afford groceries. Eligible participants receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used to purchase food at participating retailers.
In order to receive SNAP benefits, households must meet certain income and asset guidelines. For example, as of 2018, a single-person household with no children could have an annual income of no more than $15,444. For each additional family member, the household could have an additional $5,500 in income.
Once a household is deemed eligible for SNAP benefits, they will receive an EBT card in the mail. This card can be used like a debit card at any retailer that accepts EBT payments. When making a purchase, the SNAP benefits will be deducted from the total amount due.
SNAP benefits can only be used to purchase food items. This includes items like fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, dairy products, breads and cereals, and non-alcoholic beverages. SNAP benefits cannot be used to purchase items like alcohol, cigarettes, pet food, paper products, or cleaning supplies.
If you have questions about using your EBT card or about the SNAP program in general, you can contact your state’s human services agency or the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service office.
How do I use my EBT card?
Using your EBT card is easy! Just follow these simple steps:
1. When you’re ready to check out at the store, let the cashier know that you’re paying with an EBT card.
2. The cashier will swipe your card and enter the amount of your purchase.
3. You will then be prompted to enter your PIN number on a keypad.
4. After you’ve entered your PIN, the transaction will be complete and you can collect your items and leave the store.
